Chris Lumley, Founder of Design Build Race.

Engineering is in my blood. From tinkering with a souped-up Mini with my Dad; through completing an apprenticeship in toolmaking; working in engineering companies in New Zealand, Australia and the UK. I then moved into education, working as a technician in the IT and DT departments of a number of schools, until in 2018 when I decided to set up Design Build Race (DBR).

Our camps give children the opportunity to learn about engineering in a fun and safe environment – building a kit car, designing the body work and finally driving it – all the things I would have loved to have done when I was a child.

Dr Beccy Dawber, Educational Consultant and Course Tutor

I am responsible for the scientific components of the camp. I am a qualified Physics teacher with over 20 years’ experience teaching at all levels, from primary to post-graduate, at a range of prestigious institutions including Wycombe Abbey and Oxford University. I have a degree in Natural Sciences from Cambridge University, a D Phil from Sussex University and I’ve also helped run Greenpower racing at Wycombe Abbey for several years.

From my earliest childhood, I have always wanted to understand how things work, and a lifelong love of all things scientific has sprung from this. I love to share this fascination with others and I‘m really passionate about making science and engineering fun and accessible to everyone. I believe you should learn almost without noticing, by trying things out and asking why. I’ve designed the experiments and science activities at the camp to capture that sense of joy and wonder. Science is and should be amazing!
